On-Campus Employment

On Campus Employment

What is On-Campus Employment?

On-campus employment refers to any job you perform on campus where you are paid by Vincennes University. On-campus employment is a great opportunity for international students. Not only is it a way of earning extra money while going to school, but it is also way to get involved and interact with the campus community.

You will not be eligible for work-study positions because they are part of a federally funded program.

Steps to Becoming Employed On-Campus

  1. Find an on-campus job
  2. Complete the Employer Authorization Form
  3. Complete the Application for a Social Security Card
  4. Prepare Required Documents
  5. Pick up Work Authorization Letter from International Student Affairs
  6. Go to the Social Security Administration Office

How do I get authorization to work on campus?

Once you have been offered an on-campus job, print out the Employer Authorization Form, which needs to be filled out by the hiring supervisor.  When complete, return the Employer Authorization Form to International Student Affairs.

Within 1-3 business days, you will receive an email instructing you to come pick up your work authorization letter from the Office of International Student Affairs.

What are the rules to legally work on campus?

As an F-1 student, you must meet certain conditions so that you can maintain your status and be employed legally.  You must:

  • Enroll as a full-time student
  • Work no more than 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters

  • Work full time only during official university breaks (summer break, winter break, and spring break)

If you have multiple on campus jobs, please make sure that all of your employers know about all of your jobs.  (This is tied to employee benefits under the Affordable Care Act, and VU is required to monitor the hours worked per week.  This is a federal requirement for all temporary positions, for all employees – not just international students.)

* Hours cannot be averaged over a period of time.
