Peer Mentor Program 2003

The Vincennes University Peer Mentor Program is a student support service provided to new Vincennes University students. All Peer Mentors will be enrolled in the Special Leadership course (SSKL 287) during the Fall 2019 semester. Peer mentors approved for this initiative will receive a scholarship for the course.

Mission: Our mission is to provide support and guidance to our first-year students through peer mentoring relationships that will assist them in transitioning to Vincennes University academically and socially.

We achieve our mission by pairing first-year students with Peer Mentors who provide the following mentoring functions/services:

Peer Mentor Volunteer Position Description

A Peer mentor provides a social and academic support service to first-year students for an academic semester. The mentor's role is to provide mentoring functions/services that will assist entering freshman with their academic and social goals as they transition to college life.

Peer Mentors provide:

  • Acceptance/support/encouragement
  • Suggestions/guidance
  • Social goal formulation and clarification
  • Behavioral modeling

Time Commitment:

  • Required to commit to the Peer Mentor position for one academic semester
  • Class time + meetings with mentee = 3-5 hours time commitment per week including selective activity time

Peer Mentor responsibilities and duties include:

Training

  • Attend mandatory orientation provided by the Peer Mentoring Program Coordinator.

Meetings

  • Meet consistently with paired mentees once a week for at least an hour on campus
  • Plan times with your meentees can be accomplished to achieve academic goals
  • Introduce mentees to organizations and clubs on campus
  • Model appropriate social behaviors/be a role model
  • Help mentees create a meaningful relationship and develop a sense of belonging to campus

Apply now to be a mentor

Students who are selected for the Mentor Program will be given permission to register for (SSKL 287), where you will build your mentoring, professional, and leadership skills.  You will also earn a $200 spring book voucher for successful completion of the course and mentor requirements.
