Streak continues for Trailblazers

BY TRAVIS DAVID

VINCENNES, Ind. -- The Vincennes University volleyball team ran its season-high winning streak to nine matches Tuesday night with a sweep of Rend Lake College.

The Trailblazers improved to 22-8 on the season with the 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 win inside the VU PE Complex.

Trailblazer coach Gary Sien mentioned his team was not quite as sharp as in the four wins over the weekend, but winning was the main thing.

“Coming off the tournament win, I kind of was afraid of a little bit of a letdown tonight,” Sien said. “We had a few too many hitting errors and got off to a slow start defensively, but we did a good job of not allowing them to go on any big runs and that is what enabled us to win in three.”

The Trailblazers scored first in all three sets and never trailed the entire match.

Sien mentioned his team’s ability to handle the serve was a major key.

“Our serve receive was on point tonight,” he said. “That is where it starts with us. It allows us to get a good pass on point and get into our offense. Our side out game is really good which makes it hard for other teams to score multiple points in a row.”

Alison Smith led a quartet of hitters for the Trailblazers. The freshman put down 11 kills, while Ryleigh Fidler and Ariana Gentzler added 10 apiece. Grace Doane tallied nine kills.

Lucie Strasser (21) and Kloie McGrew (17) combined for 38 assists.

Ryli Bobbitt came up with four blocks, while Doane, Gentzler and Macy Michels added two stuffs each.

“Our blockers did a nice job again tonight,” Sien stated.

Allison Ruddick, who entered the match leading NJCAA Division 1 players with 640 digs on the season, tallied 20 more digs in the win.

Brantli Lannan recorded a pair of aces.

The Trailblazers return to the court Friday and Saturday while playing in the Wallace State Invite in Hanceville, AL.

“The most important thing tonight was getting this win in three,” Sien said. “We have a weekend full of tough competition coming up.”
