High school students enjoy fun activities on VU Science Fridays
It’s Friday morning, and goggle-wearing high school students from Indiana and Illinois measure, mix, and stir ingredients over a hot plate in a Vincennes University chemistry laboratory. They are learning to formulate soap and beauty cream. While they stir and mix, they learn the chemistry behind soapmaking and beauty cream as a part of Science Fridays, fun and educational days hosted by the Vincennes University College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Five Indiana mayors were VU Trailblazers at same time
In 1976, five Vincennes University students were transforming their futures and studying law enforcement, broadcast production technology, business, and more. They were living the lives of college students: studying, living in residence halls, and hanging out with friends, but their paths never really crossed. Two were even residing on the same floor of Harrison Hall but did not know each other. Decades later, their lives converged in unbelievable circumstances.

VU to commemorate 9/11 anniversary with flag tribute
VU Homeland Security and Public Safety students are holding their annual 9/11 Flag Ceremony on Monday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. (ET) on the Vincennes Campus. The Eta Sigma Iota student club will create a memorial tribute and place 3,000 flags in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and rescue efforts.

Red Skelton Museum receives major donation to build Lothian and Red Skelton Gallery of Fine Art
The Red Skelton Museum Foundation Board of Directors proudly announces the Skelton Estate has pledged a generous gift of $4 million to the Vincennes University Foundation. The magnificent donation will create the Lothian and Red Skelton Gallery of Fine Art in honor of Lothian Skelton’s late husband, world-famous comedian and Vincennes native Red Skelton.

A group of Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) students from throughout Indiana had an extraordinary opportunity to take college for a test drive recently, enjoying a week living the life of students at Vincennes University. The Vincennes University Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Aug. 23, voted to accept a generous gift commitment of $4 million from Lothian Skelton, the widow of famous comedian and beloved Vincennes native Red Skelton, which will fund an expansion of the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy located on the Vincennes Campus.

U.S. Senator Todd Young of Indiana, Indiana experts, and Hoosier leaders gathered at the Vincennes University Agricultural Center on Wednesday, Aug. 9, for a fireside chat about 21st-century agriculture and the rapid growth Indiana’s agbioscience economy has experienced over the last decade. Major building announcement excites audience at VU Opening Meeting
The dawn of a new academic year brings joy, enthusiasm, and the hope of endless possibilities. Vincennes University faculty and staff gathered at Opening Meeting on Monday, Aug. 7, to kick off the academic year. During Opening Meeting, the University announced the addition of 70,000 square feet of new learning space on the Vincennes Campus with the construction of a $33.9 million ultra-modern Center for Health Sciences and Active Learning.

Golden Opportunity: VU Biology Club takes phenomenal trip to California
From ancient redwood forests to spectacular coastlines to the largest variety of plants and animals of any state in the U.S., California has it all when it comes to nature. The Vincennes University Biology Club has used the summer break to travel to the Golden State, where they immersed themselves in learning about and exploring awe-inspiring ecosystems and habitats. Months after winning a global machining competition with his Vincennes University classmates, Nate Conrad shined in a national competition. The Spring 2023 Precision Machining Technology graduate won a bronze medal at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Mind-blowing 3D-printed creations showcased at VU event
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is revolutionizing the manufacturing, aviation, medical, consumer goods, dental, construction, and design industries. As 3D printing continues to grow, so does the demand for qualified professionals familiar with the technology and its capabilities. In partnership with Vincennes University and the H2I Group, the Stratasys World of 3D Printing made a special visit to the Vincennes Campus on Monday, July 10.

VU summer academies inspire youth to study STEM
High school students with a penchant for engineering learned about the bio-physics of the human hand and designed a biomechanical hand using everyday materials like empty Pringle cans. Other students created a TikTok video to teach how to perform hands-only CPR properly. One group of students conducted a physiological analysis to determine how the body’s pulse, blood pressure, reflexes, and breathing rate react to stimuli such as petting a cat or playing an anxiety-inducing game. These are a few of the projects rising juniors and seniors showcased at the Vincennes University Summer STEM Academy June 25-30.

We live in a technology-driven world, and today’s technology is ever-evolving. Self-driving cars are no longer a sci-fi fantasy. AI-powered chatbots are writing books. VU’s Xmester and Techmester give high schoolers a glimpse of college life
Build and program robots, write songs about societal issues, design and print 3D objects, create self-portrait collages, and conduct "autopsies" on fetal pigs. These are a few exciting projects that high school students from throughout Indiana participated in while making Vincennes University their home from June 13-16. VU welcomed nearly 350 bright young minds to the Vincennes Campus for its annual Xmester and Techmester residential pre-college programs. Opportunities to engage in hands-on experiences and out-of-the-box thinking surrounded students, and they even earned college credit.

VU and Jet Access Flight Training announce partnership to educate and train next generation of pilots
Vincennes University and Jet Access Flight Training have announced a partnership to increase the availability of commercial pilots and provide quality educational opportunities to students interested in aviation.
The Jet Access/Vincennes University (JAVU) Professional Pilot Program was designed as a way for students to take lecture courses and general education courses from Vincennes while taking flying courses through Jet Access. Students have the opportunity to qualify for financial aid and have the flexibility of taking flying courses at any of the Jet Access locations around the state of Indiana or out of state. Jet Access operates 11 flight training locations including six in Indiana.

Media Advisory: Vincennes University to host Surveying Camp for high school students
The Vincennes University Surveying Technology program is hosting a Surveying Summer Camp on May 31- June 2, 2023.
High school juniors and seniors will learn how to perform basic field procedures, interpret measurement data, and operate surveying equipment. Upon completion of the camp, campers will earn one college-level credit hour in surveying and could be prepared to work in entry-level field positions.
Campers are participating on June 1 in field workshops from 8-11 a.m. and noon - 5 p.m. They will be assisted during the workshops by experienced professionals.

High school students explore the world of chemistry at VU
Groups of students grabbed bags of their favorite foods like Fritos, Doritos, Cheetos, BBQ potato chips, and Cheez-Its, then lit the snacks on fire. It was all part of an experiment they were conducting during Chemistry High School Lab Days hosted by the Vincennes University Chemistry Department. By burning snack foods, they were determining the energy given off. Students from high schools in Indiana and Illinois learned about future science careers plus participated in experiments to build their interest in chemistry during Chemistry High School Lab Days on May 8-12.

VU Nursing students and faculty make a difference in the Dominican Republic
A dedicated group of Vincennes University Nursing students, alumni, and faculty traveled to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip this spring to serve the local community and provide medical aid to those in need. Nurses on a Mission volunteered at an orphanage and distributed hundreds of care kits with hygiene items, donated medicine, and even paid for a doctor to treat patients. The trip was eye-opening for the team of 20 individuals, including nurses, a pharmacist, and physical therapy assistants from the community.

24-hour Green Mile tests VU Conservation Law Enforcement students' endurance, skills and knowledge
A group of 24 Vincennes University Conservation Law Enforcement students participated in a grueling 24-hour exercise known as the “Green Mile” putting their physical and mental endurance and course knowledge to the test. The “Green Mile” began on Wednesday, April 19, with a fitness assessment that included a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, and a 300-meter dash. The students then engaged in a full day of real-world scenarios, land navigation, and wilderness survival training. They underwent swim tests and water survival drills at the VU Aquatic Center before participating in night operations and vehicle stops. The event included a 3.5-mile ruck along the Wabash River waterfront that finished at Kimmell Park. Despite the demanding nature of the exercise, all 24 students successfully completed the challenge that culminated around 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 20.

VU Education Department immerses local children in storybook experience
Enthusiastic and jubilant elementary school children sauntered through the Vincennes University Education Department Story Walk at Kimmell Park, reading a delightful tale in both English and Spanish about a one-of-a-kind turtle with a gorgeous garden growing on its back. Page by page, they strolled along the trail overlooking the Wabash River with their families and friends, interacting with VU Education majors and reading the illustrated children’s book “Mossy” by Jan Brett. The free community event on Thursday, April 20, offered a unique learning and social event to encourage reading and being active as a family. After reading the story, the youngsters enjoyed fun interactive activities and craft stations designed by VU students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in Education, such as petting a live turtle, creating mini terrariums to take home, building habitats for turtles, painting flower pots, and playing fun games. Free books were distributed to promote reading at home.

VU Board of Trustees recognizes students, approves tenure and promotions
At its April 19 meeting, the Vincennes University Board of Trustees approved tenures and promotions, received in-depth updates on student recruitment and the University’s Information Technology, and heard from several students doing amazing things in and outside the classroom. VU is fortunate to have dedicated, talented, and excellent faculty and staff. Nearly 20 individuals (see list below) from across the University have earned promotions or received tenure. Students were also center stage during the meeting. Students from two degree programs showed off their real-world skills for the Trustees at the Shake Learning Resource Center.

VU to host Story Walk on Wabash for elementary school students
The Vincennes University Education Department and VU Education majors are hosting a free Story Walk for elementary school students and their families on April 20, 2023, at Kimmell Park. A Story Walk is an illustrated children’s book displayed page by page along a walking route, and students go from sign to sign reading the story. Along the trail, there are multiple activities for students to enjoy. VU’s Story Walk is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

VU Homeland Security students helping with local tornado cleanup
After an EF-3 tornado ripped less than a week ago through Sullivan County, Indiana, and took lives there, Vincennes University Homeland Security and Public Safety Program Chair and retired FBI agent Lou Caprino launched his drone to capture photography of the extensive damage. Those images were then shared with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for use in their early assessment. Recalling the supportive role HSPS majors in helping New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina, Caprino quickly got to work on exploring how current students could come to the aid of a nearby community. The VU students are putting in long hours and many days of volunteer work in Sullivan this week.

VU student finishes first in state career development competition
A student in the award-winning Vincennes University Jobs for America’s Graduates College Success Program dominated a state competition at the annual JAG Indiana State Career Development Conference. VU Homeland Security and Public Safety major Mason Caudill of North Judson, Indiana, won first place in the College Success Program category and had the opportunity to meet Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb on March 17. Competitors delivered presentations explaining their career pathways and shared the benefits of participating in the JAG College Success Program. Caudill also placed first in the College Success Program division in 2021

Youth get up close and personal with VU's robots
Middle school students from Daviess, Martin, and Sullivan counties were incredibly excited to get their hands on the collaborative robots in Vincennes University’s brand-new Center for Applied Robotics and Automation. They enjoyed a recent Saturday learning how to program a collaborative robot or cobot to pick up and move blocks during a “Fun With Robotics” day in the VU College of Technology Center.

VU Precision Machining Technology students win global competition
A trio of Vincennes University Precision Machining Technology majors won first place in the Educational Division of the 2022 Mastercam Wildest Parts Competition. Composed of Nate Conrad, Jackson Roberts, and Luke Schirmer, the VU students won the top prize for their innovative and fun electric skateboard. Sponsored yearly by Mastercam, the competition encourages student interest and participation in manufacturing. The contest challenges students in high school and college to create parts demonstrating creativity and technical skill using Mastercam software.

Vincennes University Homeland Security and Public Safety students will present a community academy on various timely topics affecting communities and keynote speakers will include representatives from FBI Indianapolis and Knox County CASA. VU’s Homeland Security and Public Safety Program Chair Lou Caprino served for nearly 30 years in the FBI. On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the community academy will focus on drug concerns, juvenile crimes, hate crimes, and other domestic issues and concerns. On Thursday, March 30, 2023, presentations will focus on human trafficking, cyber threats, health hazards, and transportation hazards.

Meet VU’s Newest Trustee: Brandon Haight
The Vincennes University Board of Trustees welcomed its newest member this past month. Brandon Haight was appointed a Trustee by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, and he took his oath of office at the Board’s recent retreat. Haight possesses decades of leadership and experience in the automotive industry. He is the general manager of the East Plant at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) in Princeton, Indiana. Haight also serves as the plantwide maintenance and reliability lead and is the regional advisor for Toyota’s Manufacturing Digital Transformation initiatives with a specific focus on machine reliability.

VU Board approves honorary degrees for retired lawmakers, welcomes new Trustee
The Vincennes University Board of Trustees unanimously approved honorary doctorates for a pair of revered Hoosier lawmakers and welcomed a new Trustee at Board Retreat on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Former State Senator Luke Kenley and former State Representative Dr. Tim Brown will receive their honorary degrees during the Spring 2023 Commencement on April 29 at the P.E. Complex.

Vincennes University student-athlete Daylynn Thornton is always looking for ways to support her fellow college students. So, when the Kinesiology and Sport major won a national contest and was among 19 randomly-selected college students chosen to have a $500 donation made in their name to support an organization dedicated to fighting hunger and food education, Thornton picked Sandy’s Pantry. It provides VU students with free non-perishable food and personal care products in a friendly and supportive way.

VU and VUJ will offer help filling out FAFSA form on College Goal Sunday
Vincennes University and Vincennes University Jasper are providing prospective students and their families assistance in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form during College Goal Sunday on Feb. 26, 2023. College Goal Sunday is a free event that helps students of all ages and families complete and file the FAFSA form. The FAFSA is one of the most important steps in opening the door to financial aid.

The Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy invites visitors to explore the stories of Black Hoosiers who broke ground for their community and paved a path for future generations while making contributions to Indiana. Exhibits and events will include a traveling exhibit from the Indiana Historical Society.

Registration is now underway for the weeklong Vincennes University Summer STEM Academy. For the second straight year, VU is offering current 10th and 11th-grade students throughout Indiana the opportunity to take a deep dive into the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and get a taste of college life. As part of efforts to support inclusive learning environments for all students at any age, Vincennes University hosted special presentations by expert Jennifer Pusateri on how to minimize barriers in education and maximize learning for everyone. Around 140 people were in attendance to learn about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) students on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

VU TRIO programs are providing transformative educational opportunities for underrepresented students
February is National TRIO Month, and Vincennes University’s five TRIO programs are celebrating the educational outreach programs that help first-generation, income-eligible, and students with disabilities enter college and earn a degree. VU offers five TRIO programs: Collaborative Opportunities for Postsecondary Education (COPE) Student Support Services, Educational Talent Search (ETS), Experience VU Student Support Services, Project Achieving Success through Participation In Reaching Educational Excellence (ASPIREE), and Upward Bound. All are federally funded educational initiatives designed to motivate and assist students in their academic pursuit of completing a college degree.

Shelby Liegl is Blazing Her Trail as a Student Leader and Animal Lover
To say Shelby Liegl, ‘23, is an animal lover is an understatement. The Vincennes University Chemical Sciences and Pre-Veterinary major has many pets, including two dogs, two guinea pigs, and a sulcata tortoise. Learn more about the Evansville, Indiana, native’s animals later. Liegl’s future career plans stem from her love of animals. She aspires to become a veterinarian. She already works in a veterinary clinic and volunteers at an animal shelter. Her dream is to move to Colorado and become a wildlife veterinarian. While she works toward an associate degree, she is really enjoying being a college student.

Project ASPIREE is adding underrepresented students who have the potential to succeed in higher education at Washington Catholic Middle School, Washington Catholic High School, and North Daviess Jr/Sr High School.

Vincennes University has received a $75,000 planning grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its initiative, Advancing the Science of Reading in Indiana. The VU Education Department will use the grant to explore ways it prepares education majors with Science of Reading methods and to consider how it can expand and enhance those efforts.

VU names professor as new Director of Assessment
Vincennes University has named Matt Groneman as its new Director of Assessment. Before joining the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Groneman served as an associate professor in the University’s English Department within the College of Humanities. Since he began teaching at VU in 2010, Groneman has edited the Tecumseh Review, organized Poetry on the Green, and served for many years on both the Assessment Committee and General Education Committee.

VU kicks off COBOT training in Indiana
Vincennes University continues to make its mark statewide in bringing the future of automation to Indiana by conducting the first collaborative robot training course at the Gene Haas Training and Education Center in Lebanon. The client was Polygon Composites Technology, located in Walkerton, Indiana. Polygon Composites Technology develops composite products for different industries such as medical, construction, and agricultural. The training was conducted as part of the Fast Track program, sponsored by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and in partnership with Carmel-based Telamon Robotics and Purdue University Manufacturing Extension Partnership (Purdue MEP) to introduce cobots to Hoosier companies.

VU Board of Trustees extends President Dr. Chuck Johnson’s contract to 2025
The Vincennes University Board of Trustees voted to extend President Dr. Chuck Johnson’s contract an additional year during its regular meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Updike Hall Center for Science, Engineering and Mathematics. The Board extended Johnson’s contract through Dec. 31, 2025. Before he was appointed president in 2015, Johnson served as interim president for four months and provost for three years.

Education major Gayle Baugh ’24 loves to showcase what makes Vincennes University special and enjoys guiding visitors around campus. Baugh, who is from Greencastle, Indiana, helps the Office of Admissions introduce prospective students to college life. She is part of a dedicated team of student tour guides who show off the Vincennes Campus to future Trailblazers and their families. Her outgoing personality and ability to connect with them make her perfect for the job. This week, Baugh stepped into a new role at VU. Baugh has been appointed Student Trustee to the VU Board of Trustees by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb. She took the oath of office at the meeting of the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

VU celebrates 2022 Mid-Year Graduating Class at Commencement
Vincennes University celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2022 at its Mid-Year Commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 3. The University awarded 625 bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, and certificates to graduating students. Mid-Year graduates from all VU campuses and sites, including the Vincennes Campus, American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Campus, Aviation Technology Center, Extended Studies, Early College Program, Indiana Military Program, and Military Education were honored at Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.

2022 Mid-Year Graduate fuels her passion for agriculture
Audrey Hislip ’22 started her college path with an eye on education, but deep down she has always loved agriculture and animals. "Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had a love for animals and agriculture,” the Vincennes native says. "Even though I didn’t grow up on a farm, I still participated in 4H, was always learning something new about agriculture, and of course, had lots of animals." However, when it came time to choose a college degree, agriculture wasn’t exactly at the top of her list. Hislip began as an Education major at VU but realized it wasn’t the right fit for her. She found a mentor in VU College of Business and Public Service Dean Susan Brocksmith, who previously served as Agribusiness Program Chair and encouraged Hislip to explore agriculture as a future career.

New VU-UBMK partnership expands international opportunities for students in Mongolia
Vincennes University and the UBMK School have signed a memorandum of understanding that will create new educational and transformative opportunities for UBMK students in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. UBMK was established in 1998 by the Korean missionary association in Mongolia. It is the only K-12 Korean International school approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Mongolia. After graduating from UBMK, students can continue their education at an American university or Korean university.

VU College of Business and Public Service hosts unique cybersecurity competition
Vincennes University students and K-12 students from throughout the state of Indiana participated in a first-of-its-kind cyber competition hosted by VU’s College of Business and Public Service.
The “Don’t Feed the Phish” Challenge raised cyber security awareness. Nearly 160 students from VU, North Knox Jr/Sr High School, Central Nine Career Center, J Evert Light Career Center, Indiana Digital Learning School, Carmel High School, Westville High School, Tell City High School, and Elkhart Area Career Center competed in classrooms and computer labs across the state.

High school students compete for cash and bragging rights at VU Jasper CTIM Challenge
High school students put their skills to the test and demonstrated their knowledge of technology, innovation, and manufacturing to earn prizes in the Vincennes University Jasper CTIM Challenge. The event provides a fun, engaging, and interactive competition focused on cooperation. Approximately 144 high school students from 10 schools and one university partnership participated in the challenge at the Center for Technology, Innovation and Manufacturing on the VU Jasper Campus.

New partnership between AmeriCrew and VU strengthens in-demand career opportunities for military veterans
Vincennes University and AmeriCrew have formed a new partnership that values the unique skills of those who have served in the military plus develops in-demand and innovative career pathways for veterans. AmeriCrew is one of the first national Veteran Workforce Development companies focused on 5G wireless, Fiber and Clean Energy infrastructure projects. AmeriCrew will host the National Infrastructure Technician Academy (NITA) at VU’s Vincennes Campus and additional VU sites statewide and military education facilities throughout the country. AmeriCrew will collaborate with VU to integrate training, certification, and apprenticeship into the work schedule as it develops careers and field leadership from our nation’s transitioning warriors.

Through the imaginations of Vincennes University Education majors and Education Professor Lisa Miller, a beautifully illustrated and touching children’s book will come to life next spring along the banks of the Wabash River. Miller and the future teachers are creating a "story walk" for elementary school students in Knox County and their families to enjoy. The impactful and unique project is supported by a grant from the Knox County Community Foundation.

Adrianne Nyberg is Blazing Her Trail as a College Student and Business Owner
Adrianne Nyberg, ‘23, a business management major at VU Jasper, had a wild dream of creating a place that offers her community a way to make memories and develop close bonds with lively activities that allow families to experience fun through actions and movement. Her extraordinary idea gained momentum through a business course taught by VU faculty member Thomas King. The course gave her the knowledge and tools to open Jumping Jasper LLC, a children’s entertainment center in Jasper, Indiana, where kids and kids at heart frolic in bounce houses and enjoy the arcade while making memories that last a lifetime.
