Project EXCEL began in 1975 with thirteen seniors from the Marian Heights Academy enrolling in English Composition I and Plant and Animal Biology courses. Their high school instructor taught the classes during the high school day and students completing the courses earned not only Vincennes University credit but also high school credit. Vincennes University has allowed concurrent enrollment of high school students in college courses since 1975. Project EXCEL has shown a steady growth and is in over 90 high schools in 44 Indiana counties.

Vincennes University 's Project EXCEL program is an accredited program of the National Alliance for Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).  In addition, Project EXCEL administrators are active in the Indiana Association for Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (IACEP). The policies and procedures established for our Project EXCEL program conform to the national standards to ensure academic integrity. As an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, all Project EXCEL teachers must have the same credentials as Vincennes University full-time faculty.
